When I meet new people and a lull in the conversation occurs, we inevitably get to the question, "so, what do you do?", and I have always had a bunch of different answers for them.
For a large part of my adult life I would have answered with, "well, I am a musician in an indie-rock band called Desmond and the Tutus. Oh and I also play other instruments and also I manage the band too". The response is mixed. Some folks become concerned with my financial wellbeing and future, others feel a seething jealousy and usually start telling me about how they used to play the drums but don't get around to it much anymore, you know with work, and the kids and all that.
For a while I was able to give various other completely truthful responses such as, "I own a fried chicken and burger restaurant in Johannesburg" and, "I work as a project manager for an NGO that supports victims of gender-based violence and vulnerable groups." These days I answer with a more generic, "I am a software developer", without much further context. This invariably starts a new chapter in the conversation where I get grilled on when my interrogator is going to lose their job to AI or worse, they pitch the next Facebook to me: "50/50 split, I give the ideas and you build it, deal?"
Anyways, my point is this: my name is Craig, I do a lot of things but mostly, I create stuff and I learn how to do things. If this is what you love doing too, reach out and lets chat.
